NBA and FIBA use different quarter lengths
NBA Rule 5 sets regulation periods at 12 minutes and overtime periods at five minutes. The FIBA 2024 rules use four 10-minute quarters and five-minute overtimes. A competition label is consequently important context when comparing elapsed time or period totals.
Quarter, half and game scores
The FIBA rulebook separates regulation quarters from overtime. A quarter score describes one period; a cumulative score includes earlier periods. For a hypothetical 25–20 first quarter followed by a 20–25 second quarter, the halftime score is 45–45, not 20–25. The example illustrates score scope rather than forecasting a match.
Overtime wording must be explicit
The brand page mentions basketball, including NBA and EuroLeague. It does not establish one overtime policy for every market. Keep an official final score separate from the scope of a displayed period or market label. Whether overtime is included in a particular settlement requires the operator’s stated terms.
Quick reference
- Period score
- A score for the second quarter counts that quarter alone. It can differ from the cumulative scoreboard shown at the same moment.
- Regulation
- Record NBA or the applicable competition rules beside the duration. Twelve-minute and ten-minute quarters should not be compared as identical periods.
- Overtime
- An official final can include extra periods. State whether a quoted score is at the end of regulation or after overtime.
- Elapsed time
- Timeouts and other stoppages mean a broadcast lasts longer than the playing-clock total. Broadcast length is not a substitute for regulation duration.

Common question
Is every basketball game 48 minutes?
No. NBA regulation uses 48 minutes, while the cited FIBA rules use 40. Overtime and stoppages further distinguish playing time from elapsed broadcast time.
