Added time belongs to a half
IFAB Law 7 defines two 45-minute halves and allows for time lost. The displayed additional time is a minimum. Added time at the end of a half is not the separate extra-time period used in some competitions to decide a tied match.
A match result and qualification can differ
IFAB Law 10 distinguishes the match outcome from competition procedures such as extra time and penalties. A team can progress after a drawn regulation period. Therefore, a score caption and a statement that a team qualified can both be correct while referring to different stages.
Reading a football listing
The brand sports page mentions football competitions, but does not establish the settlement scope of every listing. Record the competition, match date, result period and whether a label concerns winning the match or advancing. Governing-body rules explain the sport; any bookmaker treatment of a postponed or abandoned event is a separate rule set.
Quick reference
- 90 + added time
- This identifies regulation time including allowances for stoppages. It does not mean the match clock must stop exactly at 90:00.
- Extra time
- This is a separate stage where the competition requires it. Keep an extra-time score distinct from the score at the end of regulation.
- Penalty shoot-out
- A shoot-out can determine who progresses after a draw. Its tally should not be silently added to the match’s ordinary goal score.
- Illustrative result
- A 1–1 regulation score followed by a 4–3 shoot-out describes a drawn regulation period and a shoot-out winner. The scope answers the apparent contradiction.

Common question
Are stoppage time and extra time the same?
No. Stoppage or added time extends a half. Extra time is a separate competition procedure used when a winner is required.
