Keep the scoring units separate
The ITF Rules of Tennis distinguish points within games, games within sets, and sets within matches. Standard set formats usually require six games with a two-game margin, with a tie-break at six-all in a tie-break set. The announced competition format determines which approved method applies.
A deciding tie-break needs a label
The ITF rules include alternative scoring methods, so a deciding match tie-break should not silently be counted as an ordinary set of games. A score such as 10–8 may describe tie-break points. Read the competition format before comparing it with a 6–4 set score.
Retirement is not a completed score
The brand sports page mentions tennis tours and Grand Slams. It does not supply an event-by-event retirement policy. A match that stops early may have an official winner without a fully played final set. Keep the sporting result, completed scoring units and any operator settlement conditions as separate records.
Quick reference
- Point / game
- Points build a game; games build a set. A tennis score cannot be interpreted correctly without knowing which level is being displayed.
- Set / match
- A 2–1 match score usually refers to sets when labelled that way. It does not mean that only three service games were played.
- Tie-break
- A set tie-break resolves a set under its format; a match tie-break can replace a deciding set under approved alternative rules.
- Illustrative score
- A player winning sets 6–0, 4–6, 4–6 wins 14 games but loses two sets to one. Total games alone do not determine that match.

Common question
Can a player win fewer total games and still win the match?
Yes. Match outcomes are decided by the required sets or the announced alternative format, rather than simply adding every game won.
